Wayne Rooney’s rampaging start to the 2011/12 season has earned him ManUtd.com's Player of the Month accolade for August.
The striker’s five goals in three games, including a setpiece hat-trick against Arsenal, helped him to edge out Ashley Young in the polls on our seven official websites – ManUtd.com and its Arabic, Chinese, French, Japanese, Korean and Spanish versions.
Rooney gleaned 41 per cent of the votes, while Young - himself the scorer of two goals against the Gunners and the creator of six August strikes - gained 38.5 per cent.
There was little to separate the other five players we shortlisted on 30 August. For example, third-placed Danny Welbeck was just one vote ahead of his good friend and the team-mate who set up his headed goal in the 3-0 win over Tottenham, Tom Cleverley.
Anderson (5th), Phil Jones (6th) and Chris Smalling (7th) were the other nominees in a month when the Reds racked up maximum league points and brought home the Community Shield after a thrilling Wembley derby win over Manchester City.
